Nairn signed for his boyhood hero’s Dundee United Academy. He fitted in instantly, scoring on his debut. The academy environment proved an excellent platform for Nairn to develop. Training 4 nights a week and playing 2 games a week, against the best young talent in Scotland allowed Nairn to develop his skills and challenge himself against the best players in the country. Throughout his time with Dundee United, his attitude and performances allowed him a number of opportunities to play up the age groups, often getting selected for older aged games. Nairn was proud to make his U18 debut at only 15. It was also during this period that Nairn was invited in trials for Scotland U16’s. He was very proud to get through number of trial matches only to miss out on the final cut. This recognition was a big positive to Nairn.
Nairn was selected by Dundee United and offered a place at their partnership school, an opportunity only offered to a select few within each age group. Despite him having to leave his own school, Nairn grabbed the new opportunity and adjusted well to his new schooling environment and having to build new relationships. This moved meant Nairn was able to benefit from football being part of his schooling timetable and offered additional footballing opportunities.
